Barbara Lynn Hogan passed away suddenly on Friday June 19, 2026, at home with her husband, Dwayne McClelland.
Barb was predeceased by her parents, Betty-Lou and George Liska, sister Ronda (Ken) Thompson, daughter Cassidee Hogan and her first husband, Edwin Hogan. Barb will be lovingly remembered and sorely missed by her husband, Dwayne McClelland; daughters Cheyney (Julian), Shayla (Spencer); stepchildren Shawn (Glynnis), Angela (Phil), Paige (Dave) and Maddy; and her beloved grandchildren Ava, Sophie, Jesper, Hudson, Willa and Charlie.
Barb was born in Edmonton on June 3, 1969. She lived there until 1973 when she, her parents and older sister, Ronda, moved to Fort Assiniboine. They lived in “the Fort” for 5 years, then moved to Red Deer where Barb completed her schooling, graduating from Camille J. LeRouge Collegiate in 1987. Barb spent one year living abroad in 1982, in Mallorca, Spain with her family for her dad, George’s, work. While in Spain, her nephew, Dustin, was born; Barb would play a large role in his life. She spoke fondly of this time and had always hoped to return to Spain.
Barb married Ed Hogan on October 14, 1989, in Red Deer. Together they had three girls: Cheyney in 1990, Shayla in 1992 and Cassidee in 1994. Ed worked as a property manager while Barb wrangled the girls and ran the household. They lived in Edmonton until 1994, then relocated to Red Deer where all 3 girls completed their schooling and each graduated from Notre Dame High School.
Barb was a tremendously supportive parent to her girls and an army of other teenagers as her kids grew. She was firm but kind and you always knew she was in your corner. She taught her girls to stick up for themselves and treat others with respect. She gave us the very best of herself and that will bring us peace.
While her girls were in school, Barb returned to school as well, training to be a Health Care Aide. She worked privately upon graduating from her program and eventually moved to CBI Health, supporting home care clients. Barb cared deeply for her clients, many of them becoming friends. She took great pride in delivering compassionate care and would have wanted her clients to know that she loved doing so. She knew the importance of her work in the daily lives of many, but it was impactful for her too. We know her clients held a unique & prized place in her heart.
Barb and Dwayne started dating in 2012; after meeting while Barb provided care for his beloved parents, Alex and Phyllis. Barb and Dwayne’s relationship brought their wonderful kids back together; Dwayne’s youngest two daughters went to school in Red Deer and had been good friends with Barb’s daughters in their childhood years. Together they shared seven children: Shawn, Angela, Paige, Maddy, Cheyney, Shayla and Cassidee and two grandchildren: Angela’s daughters, Ava and Sophie.
Barb joined Dwayne in Sherwood Park in 2013. There they had the most fantastic neighbors who turned into great friends: Megan, Darren and their daughters, Charlie and Finley. They loved to spoil the girls, and many great times were shared.
Barb and Dwayne enjoyed trips with family to Costa Rica, Mexico and camping every summer. They loved camping in their holiday trailer, particularly in Devon and Okotoks. They would divide and conquer the work, and both enjoy the adventure. Barb’s favorite things while camping were a fresh book to read, a quiet fireside spot and a burnt hot dog.
Barb and Dwayne moved back to Red Deer in 2017 and welcomed four more grandchildren: Jesper in 2018, Hudson in 2019, Willa in 2022 and Charlie in 2025. Barb loved spoiling her grandchildren. She always made sure she had equal amounts of candies for each of them, as to not start any fights. She would always share her spare change as well, a real treasure that was particularly enjoyed. Ava, Sophie, Jesper, Hudson, Willa and Charlie did not get enough time with their loving grandma but will cherish the memories they have of her; specifically, the very special, individual birthday shop.
Barb and Dwayne were married in January 2026 by their eldest daughter, Angela, surrounded by their closest family members. Despite Dwayne’s recent, difficult cancer journey, they kept up with their kids and grandkids and stayed strong for each other.
In lieu of flowers, please direct a donation to the Central Alberta Women’s Emergency Shelter or the Cancer Centre via the Red Deer Regional Hospital Foundation. Dwayne and Barb have had an excellent experience with the many different staff at the Cancer Centre, despite a challenging journey.
A Celebration of Barb’s Life will be held on Friday July 10 at 1:00pm in the Heartland Room at Westerner Park, 4847A 19 Street. Please avoid all black attire. Barb loved color and despised formal wear.
If you have a great story that you’d like to share, we will be making time to do so during the Celebration. If you would prefer not to speak in front of the group, or cannot make it on July 10, please let Cheyney or Shayla know and we can share it on your behalf.
