Youth movement injects energy into Central Alberta Buccaneers heading into AFL season

The Central Alberta Buccaneers are optimistic about the upcoming season, and a big reason for that is the recruitment efforts to bring in more youth to the club.

They were able to recruit approximately 20 new players, many of whom have recently played at the high school level in central Alberta, while also returning a core group of players from last year.

Cory French, vice president of the Buccaneers, who also plays linebacker, said after a tough season last year, they hope to turn the ship around.

“We’re expecting to compete with everybody,” he said. “We’ve done a lot of work on our socials and recruiting in general. We recruited quite a few young guys, so the outlook of the team long-term is good with the younger players coming in.”

He explained that their young players, who are expected to bring more talent and athleticism to the team, will be their strength. They will also rely on veteran players for experience and knowledge.

French said it’ll be a game-day decision on who will start at quarterback between veteran Jordan Groves and rookie Colton Thomas. Thomas was recruited out of high school this year, and French said they have high hopes for the youngster.

Meanwhile, defensively, they expect to be strong with some additions, including defensive tackle Giovanni Jose, who came from the USports level and linebacker Dreyden Schlecht, who moved over from the Canadian Junior Football League’s Edmonton Wildcats.

“We definitely feel optimistic about this season. Numbers are much higher for practice turnout than they were last year, and just the number of young guys is what is really feeding into our optimism,” he said. “When you have those young guys to build around, you know you’ve got some longevity in the team.”

This will all be on display when the Buccaneers take the field this Sunday, June 7, in Calgary against the Wolfpack to open the Alberta Football League season at 6 p.m.

“I think our chances are very good on the road… It’s going to be a hard game against the Wolfpack; they’ve got a very strong team this year, so we are expecting a battle. We are going there to compete and come back with a win,” he added.

They’ll then return for the home opener on Saturday, June 13, against the Calgary Gators at 7:30 p.m. at Setters Place.

That evening will also be more than just a football game as they’re hosting a “Bigger Than Football Night” in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Red Deer District.

As a result, a portion of the proceeds from the game will go to support the Big Brothers Big Sisters youth mentorship program.

French said some of the children from the organization will also join the players on the field during the pregame coin toss. There will also be 50/50 available for purchase that will go back to the organization.

“All kids and high school kids will also get in for free that night as well,” French said.

After playing all of their home games the last few seasons in Lacombe, the Buccaneers are returning to Setters Place in Red Deer this season.

“We are really hoping to get some community support out for us. It’s going to be great family events to come out and watch football. It’s a perfect way to spend a Saturday.”
