Innisfail Eagles say tickets are selling fast for 2nd annual Blades & Birdies golf tournament

The Innisfail Eagles senior men’s hockey team says tickets for their upcoming second annual Blades & Birdies golf tournament are still available, but are selling fast.

The tournament is set for Thursday, July 9, at the Innisfail Golf Club with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.

Eagles head coach Ryan Dodd said they’ve had over 20 teams register already.

“There’s lots of hype around this,” Dodd said. “We’ve got lots of past and current Eagles that have signed up… It’s not a traditional golf tournament, although you will play lots of traditional golf, but we’ve got a few other things mixed in there. We might throw a set of hockey gloves on you, and you have to make a golf shot, or you might have to putt with a hockey stick.”

Tickets for the tournament cost $175 per golfer, which also includes entry into a pub night the evening before, a light breakfast, food and drink at select holes, and entry into a banquet after the tournament. There will also be a silent auction, prizes, and two $20,000 hole-in-one contests.

Tickets can be purchased by registering online at Innisfaileagles.com, and they expect to have another sold-out tournament. Dodd said those not interested in golf can also pay to attend just the banquet afterwards.

Dodd explained that this is the team’s largest fundraiser of the year, with all proceeds dedicated to paying for operational costs for the team.

It will go towards things like bus rides, which Dodd said cost $2,000, and they go on about eight or so trips during the regular season. It will also be dedicated to paying for equipment and other major costs.

“When you’re a not-for-profit team, everything helps, and this is the biggest fundraiser we put on for the season. It helps us get through the year and ultimately put a very competitive hockey team on the ice,” he said.

The Eagles are a part of the Senior AA North Central Hockey League (NCHL) and are headed into their 80th season in franchise history.

This past season, they made it all the way to the Vanberg Cup Finals but fell to the Wetaskiwin Longhorns in four games.

The Eagles won the title during the 2024-25 season, defeating the Lacombe Generals in five games.

Dodd said celebrating an 80-year milestone is special.

“It’s going to be a great year. We’ve got a wonderful group of hockey players who are some of the best guys that you could ever meet. We’ve also got amazing sponsors, a wonderful board of directors, so being able to celebrate the 80th season of hockey with this group of people and the best fans in the league is great. We look to put a great quality product on the ice and entertain everyone this season.”
