All-abilities disc golf event goes May 24 at RDP course

Have you ever wanted to try disc golf, but you face personal barriers to doing so? Or perhaps you’ve never considered the difficulty of playing with a different level of physical ability.

On May 24, join the local disc golf community at the ‘Playing In My Shoes’ event at the Red Deer Polytechnic course.

The event is suitable for people of all abilities, including those who are in a wheelchair; plus, the event will encourage able-bodied players to throw from a wheelchair position so they may understand what it’s like.

The free event also falls a week ahead of National AccessAbility Week across Canada.

“This event has two connected goals of allowing participants to experience the sport through the shoes of others and also reaching out to individuals who have differing abilities to experience a sport they may have never considered. This event will hopefully lead to further conversation on how disc golf can be made more accessible locally across the country,” says Josh Smith, president, Disc Golf Association of Alberta.

“I’ve been a disc golfer for over half of my life and want everyone to give the sport a try, regardless of any background. Whether it turns into a burning passion or just a walk in the park a few times a year, getting people to throw a disc is the first step, and I want to work towards removing any barriers preventing that from happening.”

Smith says while the sport is already accessible, he wants to open more eyes to that fact.

“Experiencing sport from a different perspective allows you to understand the hidden challenges people face in their lives,” he adds.

“Everyone should try it so that their assumptions on different abilities are challenged and that they learn more about what inclusion and accessibility can look like in recreation.”

The event in Red Deer, which is happening in conjunction with many others across the country, runs from 11-2. The next closest event to Red Deer is in Drumheller at X-Crossing.
