On Wednesday, May 13, 2026, with his son by his side, Alex Wiersma passed away peacefully and went to be with his Heavenly Father.
Alex was born in July 1944 in Lutten Overysel, Netherlands to Idso and Berendtje Wiersma. He was the third oldest of nine children. In time, the Wiersma family immigrated to Canada, where Alex would build a life centered on faith, family, hard work, and service to others.
As a young man in Red Deer, Alex met Johanna Vandenbrink through church youth group activities. What began as friendship soon blossomed into a lifelong love story, and they were married in June 1968. Together they built a loving home and raised three children, sharing nearly 53 years of marriage before Johanna’s passing.
Alex dedicated his life to the construction industry, beginning work for the same employer at just 16 years old and remaining faithfully employed there until his retirement at age 65. He became a respected journeyman carpenter whose work ethic, loyalty, and craftsmanship were admired by all who knew him. More importantly, Alex was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. He showed his love for people not only through words, but through quiet acts of kindness, generosity, and service.
Alex dearly loved his wife, children, and granddaughter, and he loved them unconditionally. Together, Alex and Johanna became like parents and grandparents to many others throughout the community, opening their home and hearts to those around them.
One of Alex’s greatest joys was fishing. Whether on a quiet lake or sharing stories afterward, fishing was a way to connect with friends, family, enjoy God’s creation, and pass along treasured memories. He especially cherished spending time with his children and granddaughter, creating a bond and legacy that will continue for generations.
Alex was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Johanna, and his son Mark. Alex leaves to mourn his daughter Ria (Andreas) Hefti, son Darryn (Christina) Wiersma and his granddaughter Chloe Wiersma. Alex was a Loving and Caring; Husband (Best Friend), Father, Grandfather (Opa) and Friend. Alex will be dearly missed. Together, Alex and Johanna leave behind a legacy of faith, love, kindness, and compassion that will continue to impact many lives.
John 16:22
“So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.” (English Standard Version, 2025)
