The Lacombe Police Service has arrested an individual following incidents involving counterfeit currency last week.

Police say on Saturday, April 18, police received a report at 2:14 p.m. that a woman attempted to use a counterfeit $100 bill at a business in the 5000 block of 52 Street.

The business refused the transaction after determining the money was fraudulent.

Police say a similar attempt had occurred moments earlier at another business where staff also turned away the currency.

The business owners communicated with one another about the incidents and called the police.

Officers then attended the call and gathered statements. Police also reviewed the security camera footage, which assisted in identifying a suspect.

After an investigation, the Lacombe Police Service found and arrested an individual at a residence in Lacombe. Officers located a counterfeit $100 bill in the suspect’s possession during the arrest. The person was also found to be wanted on an outstanding warrant from another jurisdiction.

The accused was taken into custody without incident and held for a judicial interim release hearing. Charges in relation to uttering counterfeit currency are pending.

“The Lacombe Police Service would like to thank the involved business owners for their vigilance and communication, which played a key role in the successful outcome of this investigation,” as written in a media release. “Police remind the public and local businesses to remain alert when handling cash transactions. Anyone who suspects counterfeit currency is encouraged to refuse the bill and contact the police.”
