A pair of teams from central Alberta is set to take part in the U15 A Girls Hockey Provincial Championships in Calgary.

From March 26-29, teams from Red Deer and Rimbey will take the ice at the Great Plains Recreation Centre in addition to representation from communities such as Calgary, Grande Prairie, Sturgeon County, Wood Buffalo, and St. Paul.

Opening ceremonies will take place at 2:45 p.m. on Thursday at the Centre, officially launching four days of competitive hockey and community celebration.

The championship tournament will feature eight teams that will battle in hopes of reaching the provincial title on March 29.

“This event represents the very best of what girls’ hockey in Alberta has to offer,” said Steve Parsons, Chair of the Organizing Committee. “The skill, determination, and sportsmanship these young athletes bring to the ice is truly inspiring. We’re proud to host a tournament that not only crowns a champion but also celebrates the continued growth of the game.”

Organizers say since the 2016/2017 season, women’s hockey participation in Alberta has increased by 36.39 per cent.

Albertans are encouraged to come out and support these athletes throughout the tournament.

The schedule will be released as teams are announced.
