RDP Athletes of the Week: March 6-8

Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) Athletics is very proud to announce Mia McGregor (Queens Hockey) and Holden Knights (Kings Hockey) as the Boston Pizza RDP Athletes of the Week:

Mia McGregor – Queens Hockey

Program – Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences (2nd)

Hometown – Waskada, Manitoba

Mia McGregor, a talented second-year forward from Waskada, Manitoba, played a pivotal role in helping the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Hockey team take a two-game lead in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women’s Hockey Championship.

She accumulated four points in two games and was named the Queens Player-of-the-Game in both contests.

In Friday’s 2-1 victory, McGregor scored the opening goal at 1:40 of the second period. She also assisted on teammate Camryn Ward’s marker in overtime.

On Saturday, McGregor, a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences student, assisted on Ward’s power play goal at 6:46 of the opening frame. Then she scored in overtime to lift the RDP Queens to a 2-1 victory and a 2-0 lead in the series.

McGregor and the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens will play the Lakeland College Rustlers on Friday, March 13, at 7:15 pm on the road in game three of the best-of-five championship.

Holden Knights – Kings Hockey

Program – Business Certificate (4th)

Hometown – Warman, Saskatchewan

Holden Knights was a difference maker for the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team in its semi-final series against the Portage College Voyageurs, recording six points in two games.

In Friday’s 8-2 victory, Knights, a Business Certificate student, totalled four points. He assisted on teammate Mason Bueckert’s goal at 4:29 of the opening stanza. Then Knights scored on the power play late in the first period. He added an assist on Shayne Tibbles’ second-period goal. Knights recorded his second tally of the contest in the third period and was named the Kings Player-of-the-Game.

On Saturday, Knights, a fourth-year forward from Warman, Saskatchewan, contributed two points in the RDP Kings’ 6-3 win over the Voyageurs. He assisted on Alex Bernauer’s tying goal early in the third period. Knights scored the game-winning goal at 8:43 of the final frame.

Next, Knights and the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team will face off against the SAIT Trojans at 7 pm on Friday, March 13, at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre in game one of the best-of-five ACAC Championship.
