Blackfalds to host U18 A provincial hockey championships

The Blackfalds Minor Hockey Association announced they’ve been awarded to host the 2026 Hockey Alberta U18 A Provincial Championships.

From March 26-29, they’ll welcome the top eight U18 A teams across Alberta, including the host U18 Blackfalds Bulldogs.

Organizers say the event is expected to bring significant regional traffic and economic activity to Blackfalds and surrounding communities.

“We are incredibly proud to host this year’s U18 A provincials,” said the Blackfalds Bulldogs U18 A host planning committee in a media release. “This is a tremendous opportunity to showcase our athletes, our volunteers, and our community. Hosting provincials reflects the strength of minor hockey in Blackfalds and the commitment of our families and supporters.”

Opening ceremonies are set for Friday, March 27, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. The weekend will also include a championship banquet celebrating players and teams, a community pancake breakfast on Saturday morning, and four days of competitive hockey.

Organizers of the tournament are currently looking for sponsors, donations and volunteers.

“Sponsorship opportunities are available at various levels, and volunteer roles range from event operations and admissions to raffle support and hospitality,” as stated in a media release. “Any funds raised beyond tournament costs will support the Blackfalds Minor Hockey Association, contributing to player, goalie, and referee development, as well as equipment and jersey initiatives.”

The committee has also committed to donating five per cent of the proceeds back into the town to organizations such as the Blackfalds Food Bank.
