June M. Berg
August 1942 – January 2026
With loving hearts and cherished memories, we share the passing of our beloved mom, June, known most lovingly as Fama to her grandchildren.
June’s children Shane (Karen), Darren (Emily), and Nolan (Cindy); her twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and her brother Richard (Joy) are all better people for having been blessed with her love and her joyful perspective on life. She is now reunited with her beloved husband Leif, cherished by the grandchildren as Fafa, along with her parents, Frank and Mary, and her brother Frank.
June was a ray of sunshine in the lives of those who knew her. She had a rare gift for making people feel seen and loved. Her radiant smile lit up every room, her laugh was unmistakable, and she had an effortless way of connecting with anyone, anywhere. Strangers quickly became friends, friends became family, and family was always at the centre of her world.
June was born in Winnipeg, where a YMCA dance changed the course of her life. There she met the love of her life, Leif. As the family story goes, he may have thought he was chasing her — but he chased her until she caught him. Together they built a life filled with love and laughter and raised their family in Alberta.
June believed celebrations were best with food, stories were meant to be shared, and there was always room for one more person at the table. Her home was open, welcoming, and full of life. Many meals began with her beloved “Fama Grace”:
For the food we eat and the clothes we wear,
For constant love and tender care,
We give Thee thanks, O Lord, Amen.
June was fiercely devoted to her family. She loved deeply and unapologetically, teaching her children and grandchildren what it meant to care for one another, stand up for what matters, and show up with kindness. She was her boys’ biggest fan, a formidable protector when needed, and a joyful presence at every milestone, always encouraging, always proud, and often the loudest cheer in the room. Many Berg graduates crossing a stage knew to expect Fama’s unmistakable “WAHOOOO!!”
Being Fama was one of her greatest joys. Her grandchildren adored her. It is impossible to fully capture how deeply she shaped their lives except to see it in the way they laugh without restraint, love with open hearts, and embrace each day and every interaction with openness and kindness. Few things brought her more happiness than gathering everyone together to share stories over a meal and laughing until it hurt.
June also had a deep love of nature, animals, and the simple joy of being outdoors. With Leif, she found their happy place on their quarter section along the North Saskatchewan River, “the Quarter,” where they escaped the city with their boys and built something lasting. There they taught their boys to love the land and understand that hard work builds character. In time, June and Leif retired there, where nature had a way of keeping them young, surrounded by trees, wildlife, gardens, and a life that felt richer with dirt on your hands and flowers nearby.
While we are heartbroken to say goodbye, we find comfort knowing June has caught up to her beloved Leif. Together again, there is now a little more laughter and a whole lot more love in heaven.
We will miss her smile, her laugh, her warmth, her stories, and her boundless love, but her bright spirit lives on in the family she built and the countless lives she touched.
A celebration of life will be shared in the spring.
