playoff race getting interesting

Hungry Rebels dominate in 5-2 win over Warriors

Feb 7, 2026 | 10:17 PM

The now 19-27-2-2 Red Deer Rebels finally found a way to take down the 19-26-4-2 Moose Jaw Warriors on Saturday night at the Centrium, winning 5-2 in the teams’ fourth meeting of the season.

The previous three all fell in Moose Jaw’s favour, though the Rebels did pick up two loser points in those matchups.

And the two points were massive as Red Deer now sits three points up on Regina for the final Eastern Conference playoff seed, though Regina does have two games in hand. Regina lost 4-3 in regulation to Calgary on Saturday.

The game also had a bit of extra flair with the Rebels donning a jersey designed through the CHL Jersey Design Contest, supporting the President’s Choice Children’s Charity in their fight against childhood hunger.

Post-game, rdnewsNOW caught up with Captain Talon Brigley about the jerseys, the big win, and what it’s going to take to secure a playoff spot down the stretch, with just 18 games remaining.

Scoring Summary

Aleksey Chichkin (2nd) put Red Deer on the board early Saturday, just 4:24 in, after taking a deft pass across the slot before burying it from the bottom of the circle past former Red Deer Rebels goalie Chase Wutzke.

Then, Captain Brigley (16th) buried another to make it 2-0 at 8:29 of the opening frame.

It was 2-0 after 20 minutes.

In the middle stanza, Tyson Yaremko (7th) made it 3-0 with a power play goal at 6:24 — the result of a tripping minor.

Beckett Hamilton (17th) then made it 4-0 Rebels at 17:14 of the period, which saw Red Deer rack up 25 shots.

Unfortunately for Rebels netminder Matthew Kondro, who was playing very well, his shutout bid was stumped with 31 seconds remaining in the second, as Pavel McKenzie (15th) fired a shot through the legs of a Rebels defender and over the goalie’s shoulder.

After 40 minutes, it was 4-1 Red Deer.

The third period was the visitors’ best, as they pushed back and tried to find a way back in the game.

McKenzie (16th) scored once again at 14:47 to make it somewhat close in the late going.

But with the goalie pulled, Landon MacSwain (11th) would ice the game away for Red Deer, finding the empty net with 3:03 still on the clock.

Final score: 5-2 Rebels.

Red Deer outshot Moose Jaw handily, 48-30, including the aforementioned 25-shot second period that saw the Warriors get just five.

Kondro gets the win with 28 saves, and Wutzke takes the L making 43 stops in his return to Red Deer after being dealt last November.

Head Coach Marc Habscheid spoke to media following his team’s win:
