Rebels grind out upset win over Prince George Cougars

Feb 3, 2026 | 10:41 PM

The Red Deer Rebels put a wrap on their six-game B.C. road trip Tuesday night with a thrilling 3-2 victory over the vaunted Prince George Cougars.

The Rebels finish their west coast trek with a record of 2-4; on the season, meanwhile, they’re now 18-27-2-2 with 19 games on the schedule. They’re currently two points ahead of the idle Regina Pats for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, though Regina has three games in hand.

As for the Cougars, this was the only time this season PG and RD were set to dance, with the home team having had much brighter results this season. Entering the contest, Prince George was third in the Western Conference with a record of 29-17-2-0.

Recapping the road trip: Prior to tonight’s huge two points in PG, Red Deer lost 5-3 to Penticton, 5-3 to Kelowna, 5-2 to Kamloops, and then 6-3 to Victoria, before finally finding a win, 2-1 over Vancouver.

Congrats are warranted to Rebels head coach Marc Habscheid who earned his 600th regular season win in the WHL. He is just the sixth WHL head coach to reach that milestone.

Scoring Summary

Neither team scored in this one until late in the first period when at 16:40, Cameron Kuzma (7th) gave the Rebels the lead.

Goals came more frequently in the second, however.

Brock Souch (17th) got the Cougars back to even with a power play goal at 7:34, then Carson Carels put PG ahead at 9:35.

But before the period could end, Poul Andersen (16th) equalized for the visitors at 15:29.

Then, with a power play late, Red Deer would find the dagger, as Patrick Sopiarz (6th) bulged twine with just 3:03 left on the clock.
