REMEMBERING REV. DOUG PRATT – Doug passed away at Red Deer Hospital on January 23, 2026 at age 98. He was born August 20, 1927 in North Battleford, Sask. His family had deep roots in that city, especially in the field of music, particularly in churches. That strong influence was a key factor that encouraged him to study theology after spending one year studying to be a pharmacist. After high school he worked as a trainman with the CNR for 4 years before expanding his horizons. He was ordained in 1956 and served as a United Church minister in Dundurn, SK in 1956; Maidstone, SK from 1956 to 1962; Edmonton, AB from 1962 to 1974; Hamilton, ON from 1974 to 1984; and Gaetz United Church in Red Deer from 1984 to 1992 from where he retired. After retirement he provided supply preaching to several churches in central AB including Bashaw/Mirror where fond memories and friendships were formed.
Doug was an avid reader of History, Science and Politics, and especially of Contemporary Theology, where he was a supporter of Progressive Christianity in his later years. He became committed to finding and expressing the heart of Christianity in language and thought that made sense in modern times as he joined the quest for clearer ways of understanding God. He was inspired and encouraged by those who professed to see (in a time of tradition and institutional decline) a progressive trend toward openness and inclusiveness with fresh insights into religious thinking with even those who claim no formal belief as we become more of a community, a spiritual, ecological and global village.
Doug leaves behind, with great reluctance, but profound gratitude, his three sons Jim (Judy) of Estevan, SK; Murray of Delta, BC; and David (Carol) of Paris, ON who, (in his own words) blessed and enriched his life beyond measure, as did his two children who predeceased him: Ross (2005), Barbara (2012). Their passing left him desolate and diminished. His devoted first wife, Jean passed in 2016. His supportive second wife, Miriam passed in 2020. Doug leaves a scattered, but cherished family of 10 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Winnifred (1983), sister Marjorie (2010), and sister, Sheila (2025). A faithful, respected ‘bonus’ nephew, David Eggleston (Stettler) also survives him.
A final haven of rest was found at Inglewood Optima from 2021 to 2026 where he found enduring comfort from both old and new friends, and from a devoted family of caregivers and staff. Doug left this world satisfied, with a heart full of love and gratitude. AMEN.
