Elsie MacRae, formerly Hapko (née Okrainec), passed away peacefully on January 17, 2026, at Aspen Ridge Senior Living in Red Deer, Alberta, at the age of 95 years.
Born on April 16, 1930, on a farm in Brightstone, Manitoba, Elsie was the daughter of Wasyl and Katherin Okrainec and one of ten children. She spent her early years living and working on the family farm and later in the communities of Lac du Bonnet and Pinawa, Manitoba.
In 1946, Elsie married Carl Hapko. Together they raised five children: Shirley, Donna, Charles, Jacquie, and Maryanne. Carl passed away in 1976. Elsie later lived in Castlegar, British Columbia, and Calgary, Alberta, before moving to Los Angeles in 1982, where she married Edward MacRae. Edward predeceased her in 2004 and Elsie remained in Los Angeles until 2020, when she returned to Alberta, living in Innisfail and later at Aspen Ridge Senior Living in Red Deer, Alberta.
Elsie is lovingly remembered by her daughters and their families:
Shirley Quirico, grandson, Vince Quirico, and great-granddaughters Alyssa Nelson (husband, Jason, and great-great-grandson Jack) and Rieley Quirico;
Donna Arnold and husband Raymond Arnold, granddaughter Corrinne Pidhorney (husband, Curtis, and great-grandsons Peyton and Sydney), and grandson, Jeffrey Arnold (great-granddaughters Molly and Charlotte); Jacquie Nixdorf;
Maryanne Reich, granddaughter Amanda Reich, and grandson, Adam Reich.
Elsie is also survived by Charles’s family: Shanna Friesen (husband Shawn, and great-grandsons Charlie and Walter), and grandson Christopher Hapko (wife Demi, and great-grandson Everett and her great granddaughter Sophia). Elsie was predeceased by her son, Charles Hapko.
Elsie was a great gardener and cook, she enjoyed going on walks, and visiting with others. She was deeply involved in the Catholic Church and was known for her kindness and willingness to care for others whenever she saw a need.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Aspen Ridge Senior Living for the compassionate and dedicated care and support they provided to Elsie and her family.
A Funeral Service will be held at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, Innisfail, Alberta on Saturday, January 31, 2026 at 11:00 a.m.
