With love and deep sadness, the family of Barbara Beverly Moffat (née Nordin) announces her passing on January 1, 2026, at the age of 85. Barbara passed away peacefully, with her family at her side, in accordance with her wishes.
Born on May 4, 1940, in Rainy River, Ontario, Barbara grew into a woman known for her quiet strength, warmth, and steady sense of responsibility. Those qualities shaped her life, her family, and the community she served.
Barbara dedicated her professional life to caring for others. She worked as a nurse in Red Deer for more than 35 years, spending most of those years in the Emergency Department at the Red Deer Regional Hospital. Calm under pressure, compassionate with patients and families, and deeply respected by her colleagues, Barbara touched countless lives through her skill, kindness, and steady presence.
She married Dennis Moffat, and together they built a life grounded in family, integrity, and hard work. For decades, Barbara worked beside Dennis at The Original Market at Red Deer, where she became a familiar and comforting presence. Many will remember her as the quiet strength behind the scenes — thoughtful, observant, and always making sure people felt seen and welcome.
Barbara lived an active, full life. She exercised daily and rarely sat still for long. She loved sports — cheering on hockey, tennis, golf, and especially her beloved Blue Jays. At the age of 40, she completed a triathlon, a testament to her determination and spirit. Time outdoors brought her joy, and gardening was one of her greatest passions. Barbara also had a deep love of travel and curiosity about the world. With Dennis and close friends, she journeyed to many remarkable places — across Asia and Europe, through Micronesia, and to unique destinations such as the Galápagos Islands and Easter Island. Those travels filled her with stories, wonders, and lasting friendships.
To her family, Barbara was the heart of home. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, proud grandmother, and faithful friend. Her kitchen table — much like her place at the market — was a gathering place for conversation, laughter, and honest, practical wisdom.
Barbara is survived by her beloved husband, Dennis, and her four children: Patrick;
Lila (and her husband Gary, and their son Brock); Michelle (and her husband Robert, and their children Andrew and Lauren); and Fiona (and her husband Chris).
She will be remembered for her compassion, her strong work ethic, her incredible sense of humor, her sense of adventure, her love of nature and activity, and her unwavering devotion to her family and community.
In keeping with Barbara’s wishes, there will be no funeral or gathering held in her name, and her family will lovingly honor this request.
Special thanks to the Red Deer Hospice for the beautiful and wonderful care she received. The family is deeply grateful for the compassion and dignity shown to Barbara in her final days. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Red Deer Cancer Society, The Red Deer Regional Hospital Foundation or the Red Deer Hospice in Barbara’s memory.
