Mavis Maureen Johnson of Red Deer, AB, passed away at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on January 4, 2026, at the age of 92.
Mavis was born in Prince Rupert BC and raised throughout her childhood in Lougheed, AB. Those early years shaped the resilience, honesty, and independence that defined her life. She carried her roots with pride and never forgot where she came from.
She attended nursing school in Grande Prairie AB and became a nurse’s aide, dedicating her working life to caring for others. Mavis worked at the Red Deer Regional Hospital and at hospitals in Edmonton, where her compassion, work ethic, and no-nonsense approach made her both respected and appreciated. Helping others was not just her profession—it was part of who she was.
Mavis was married to Ron Johnson, who predeceased her in 1989. Together, they built a life centred on family, perseverance, and shared strength—values that continued to guide her long after his passing.
As a mother of five, a grandmother, and a great-grandmother, Mavis was a steady and loving presence. She noticed the details others missed, remembered the stories that mattered, and passed down not just family history, but family character. Her laughter filled rooms, her advice lingered long after conversations ended, and her influence will continue through generations. She loved deeply, observed quietly, and supported fiercely.
One of Mavis’s great joys in life was her unwavering love for the Toronto Blue Jays. Game days mattered. Scores were followed closely, wins were celebrated with genuine enthusiasm, and loyalty was non-negotiable. Watching a Blue Jays game with Mavis was an experience in itself—she knew the team, cared about every play, and made it clear where her allegiance stood. It was one of the many ways she connected with family, tradition, and the simple pleasures of life.
Mavis did not need to be loud to be unforgettable. She was real, she was sharp, and she was deeply loved. Her legacy lives on in the stories told, the laughter shared, the Blue Jays games watched in her honour, and the unmistakable wit that her family will forever recognize as purely hers.
Mavis Johnson was a woman who carried her wit as naturally as her smile. It was quick, sharp, and perfectly timed—never unkind, always memorable. She had a way of saying exactly what needed to be said, often with a twinkle in her eye that made it clear she was one step ahead of everyone else. Mavis was genuine, strong, and deeply herself, and those who knew her would tell you that life was never dull in her presence.
She will be deeply missed by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all who knew and loved her—and remembered more often than she would probably allow without a clever remark in return.
In following with Mavis’s wishes, no funeral will be held.
