RDP Athletics recap: Jan. 23-25

This week, the Red Deer Polytechnic basketball and volleyball teams will play the Olds College Broncos. The Queens hockey team will challenge the Medicine Hat College Rattlers, and the Kings hockey team will face the NAIT Ooks. The RDP indoor track team will open its season in Edmonton.

Here is a summary of the upcoming competition:

Basketball

Queens vs. Broncos | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, January 24 | 6 p.m.

The eighth-seed RDP Queens basketball team (3-11) will tip off against the seventh-place Olds College Broncos (4-10) in Red Deer.

The Queens have averaged 3.3 blocks per game.

Kings vs. Broncos | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, January 24 | 8 p.m.

The eighth-place RDP Kings (1-13) will play the seventh-place Broncos (2-12).

The Kings have successfully connected on 27.8 per cent of their three-point attempts.

Indoor Track

Kings & Queens | Running Room Grand Prix #1 | Kinsmen Sport Centre | Sat., Jan. 24 | 8 a.m.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens indoor track teams will compete in Running Room Grand Prix #1 hosted by Concordia University in Edmonton.

Head Coach Michael Schnare, the 2025 ACAC Indoor Track Coach of the Year, says the program’s goals extend far beyond the podium.

“We want to see each student‑athlete make personal improvements throughout the season while working together as a team,” he explained. “Beyond medals, fostering community within the team, supporting one another and creating positive relationships with other teams in the ACAC are also values of the RDP Indoor Track team.”

Volleyball

Queens vs. Broncos | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, January 23 | 6 p.m.

The top-seed Red Deer Polytechnic Queens volleyball team (10-2) will host the fifth-place Olds College Broncos (3-10).

Red Deer’s Maddy DeZutter, Queens libero, ranks fourth in the league with 3.27 digs per set.

Queens at Broncos | Saturday, January 24 | 6 p.m.

The Queens will compete against the Broncos on the road.

Kings vs. Broncos | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, January 23 | 8 p.m.

The first-place Kings volleyball squad (10-2) will play the fifth-place Olds College Broncos (5-8).

Red Deer’s Coby Nemeth leads the league with 4.31 kills per set.

Kings at Broncos | Saturday, January 24 | 8 p.m.

The RDP Kings will face the Broncos in Olds.

Hockey

Queens at Rattlers | Friday, January 23 | 7:30 p.m.

The second-place RDP Queens hockey team (14-4) will challenge the fourth-seed Rattlers (5-12) in Medicine Hat.

The Queens have the top-ranked power play (19.1 per cent) in the ACAC.

Queens at Rattlers | Saturday, January 24 | 1 p.m.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens hockey team will face off against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers in an afternoon tilt.

Kings at Ooks | Friday, January 23 | 6 p.m.

The first-place RDP Kings hockey team (14-2) and seventh-seed NAIT Ooks (5-9) will meet in Edmonton.

The Kings have killed off 91.8 per cent of their penalties, ranking first in the league.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team will play the NAIT Ooks at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.
