Alberta independence petition events continue in central Alberta

Jan 20, 2026 | 2:47 PM

Central Albertans who haven’t had a chance and are hoping to sign a petition calling for a referendum on Alberta Independence will get the opportunity today and tomorrow.

Tonight in Ponoka, an Alberta Independence Town Hall on Jan. 20, organized by Stay Free Alberta, will be held at Moose Hall at 6:30 p.m. and is free to attend.

There will also be a similar event at the Rocky Regional Health Centre on Jan. 20 in Rocky Mountain House from 7 to 9 p.m. There will be another opportunity on Wednesday, Jan. 21, at the same time.

On Wednesday, Jan. 21, a signing-only event will be held at Legacy Place Red Deer in Red Deer County from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Further down the line, Alberta Independence Town Halls are scheduled to be held in Ponoka County on Jan. 26 at the Homeglen Community Hall at 7 p.m. and in Blackfalds on Jan. 31 at 2 p.m. at the community hall.

The referendum, organized by Mitch Sylvestre, CEO of the Alberta Prosperity Project, was approved by Elections Alberta in December 2025.

To succeed, the petition must gather 177,732 signatures by May 2.

The petitions asks, “Do you agree that the province of Alberta should cease to be a part of Canada to become an independent state?”

To be eligible to sign, you must be 18 years old and a Canadian citizen. Signatures must also be made in person, and you will be asked to provide a government-issued ID as well as proof of residency.

A pair of events were held in Red Deer earlier this month, including an Alberta Independence Town Hall on Jan. 14 at Festival Hall, where people could learn more about the referendum and sign the petition.

In a post on social media from Alberta Independence, it appears to show a long line of people waiting to sign the petition and organizers called it their longest line yet.

More events are scheduled across Alberta in the coming weeks.
