Despite a slow start, the Red Deer Rebels found their groove in the second period en route to a 4-3 victory over the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Wednesday.

Their second-straight victory was a full team effort, which included two power play markers after outshooting their opponents 37-25. Rebels netminder Matthew Kondro also made 22 saves in the effort.

After a scoreless first period, the Hurricanes opened the scoring 32 seconds into the second.

Red Deer native Easton Daneault put the Hurricanes on top after he knocked in his own rebound. Kondro made the initial save, but Daneault gathered the rebound and tucked it in behind.

Red Deer found the equalizer with 16:49 left in the middle frame with an import-to-import connection.

Forward Matej Mikes from Czechia knocked in the puck following a perfect dish out front from Slovakian defenceman Matus Lisy.

Approximately 10 minutes later, Red Deer took their first lead of the game on the power play.

Defenceman Nate Yellowaga fired a shot just inside the blue line that made its way through traffic before redirecting off forward Landon MacSwain and in. Yellowaga was ultimately credited with the goal.

The Rebels added another on the power play with less than four minutes to go in the period. A shot from Tyson Yaremko redirected off the body of Poul Andersen and into the net.

The goal was reviewed by the officiating staff, who ruled it a good goal after checking to see if Andersen hit it in with his hand.

In the third period, the Hurricanes got on the board again with a goal from Tyden Lafournaise with just under 11 minutes to go.

However, the Rebels responded 1:13 later with a goal from Cameron Kuzma, who ripped a shot from the right circle off the feed from Andersen. Kuzma’s tally was ultimately the deciding goal.

With approximately two minutes remaining, the Rebels took a penalty to give the Hurricanes a six-on-four advantage with the goalie pulled. Kade Duell brought the Hurricanes within one goal of tying it with a minute and a half left, but were unable to find the equalizer.

Next up, the Rebels will return home for a pair of games at the Centrium this weekend. They’ll face the Tri-City Americans on Friday at 7 p.m., followed by a rematch with the Canes on Saturday at 6 p.m.
