In loving memory, we the family of Gerald Warren Ohrn wish to announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather on December 28, at Bethany CollegeSide in Red Deer, Alberta. Gerald was to born to Ellen and Henry Ohrn in Thorsby, Alberta on March 19, 1932.
Like many Albertans of his era, he got his start working in remote logging camps and in the oil patch. He married Lucille Daruda in 1954 and they settled in north Red Deer to raise their family. Dad worked for Harper’s Metals for several years, earning his welding ticket and eventually established Gerry’s Welding which he operated in the 60’s and 70’s. A farm boy at heart, it was always his dream to own a farm and in 1971, he and mom bought a bare quarter of land in the Penhold area. Together they built their modest Maple Lane Farm from the ground up, tending the crop land and milking a small dairy herd. More so, than to be a dairy herdsman, dad had always wanted to start a herd of registered Black Angus cattle, an interest he shared with son-in-law Brian. In 1979 with the purchase of eighteen Angus heifers, Maple Lane Angus came to be. The years passed and dad retired from the cattle business. He was a man of many pursuits, keen on leather work, he built several saddles and a lot of horse tack. He was musically inclined and could play several instruments all by ear as well as sing and yodel.
Gerald loved his family, the land and all of God’s creatures. He was fond of horseback riding in the mountains and often expressed that it was there, where he felt the most at peace.
Gerald leaves to mourn his wife Lucille of seventy one years, daughter Judy (Brian), sons Jordy (Patty) and Darren, grandchildren Shaun (Autumn), Abby (Brent), Janelle and Jenna, great grandchildren; Summer, Saige, Rylyn, Owen, Shay and Jack. He was predeceased by his parents, Ellen and Henry Ohrn, his sisters Helen Brown, Lois Lovely and brother Darvin.
We as a family would like to acknowledge and thank Bonnie Stickney, family friend and caregiver and to the staff of Bethany CollegeSide, Unit B1 for their outstanding care and devotion shown to dad during the last few years of his life. He was a good man and will be missed by many.
