Mrs. Joyce Elizabeth Dowler, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, entered peacefully into rest surrounded by her family on December 13, 2025, at the Innisfail Health Care Centre, at the age of 86 years.
Joy was born in Calgary, Alberta on January 13, 1939, to Maule and Elizabeth McEwen. She was known for her bright smile, fashionable taste, seamstress expertise, beautiful singing voice, crafting talents, warm heart, and deep love for her family. Joy dedicated her life to raising her family and building a happy life alongside her husband, Barry. They met in Calgary, Alberta and were married there in 1963. Calgary was assumed to remain their home until Barry made a decision to go back to university to complete his teaching degree. After graduating, his first job offer was in Caroline, Alberta. They chose to take this offer and happily lived there from 1971 to 1985. They then moved their family to Innisfail. Here they both continued to work, volunteer and enjoy cheering proudly at all the hockey games, ball games, soccer games and dance competitions. After Barry passed, Joy kept up her volunteer duties at the Innisfail Hospital Ladies Auxiliary Tuck Shop and the tradition of being her family’s number one fan, rarely missing a game or any event her grandchildren were starring in.
Through the years at the rink, Joy made friends with a great group of hockey Moms who continue to watch over one another and meet monthly for lunch dates.
She is lovingly remembered by her children: Mark (Shelly), Colleen (Ian), and Scott (Michelle). Joyce was a proud and devoted grandmother to Andy Willigar (Michelle); Bryce (Cassie); Connor (Lotte); Haley
(Stuart); Kaitlyn; MiKayla, and Riley. She will also be lovingly remembered by her two great
grandchildren, Jones and Harper (Andy and Michelle).
Joy was predeceased by her beloved husband, Barry, in 2004; her parents, Maule McEwen (1999) and Elizabeth McEwen (2010); her sister, Carrol Wells (2025); and her nephew, Guy Wells (2025).
Joy’s legacy lives on through the many lives she touched, the lifelong friendships she cultivated, and through the strong family bond that she and Barry instilled in all their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
There will be a Celebration of Life Tea and the Ol’ Moose Hall Tuesday, January 13, 2026 at 2:00 p.m.
