STUEBING, Dr. Bill
1944 –2025
“How lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”
~A.A. Milne, author of Winnie the Pooh
Softly and tenderly in his 82nd year, and peacefully in his sleep, Dr. William ‘Bill’ Kenneth Stuebing passed away on December 5, 2025, at Bethany CollegeSide in Red Deer, Alberta. Bill was born in North Bay, Ontario, on March 16, 1944, and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, however, his life really began when he moved to Alberta and met his beloved wife of 52 years, Linda Gail Stuebing (nee Loder), ultimately making Red Deer, Alberta, his home. Bill was a wonderful partner, husband and citizen who cared deeply for his family, friends and community (as well as his Winnipeg Blue Bombers!). He was a caring, inspiring and an engaged dad to Emmy, Ken, Robbie and Sarah – from building the legendary play house at 56 Brown Close, to painting tap shoes for dance competitions, leading Beaver and Cub packs, helping with school projects and coaching Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School Raiders Football – Bill was always there for and with his kids (and their friends). Bill absolutely loved being a dad (and his kids knew they were very, very blessed to have him as their dad). Bill’s other great love, besides his family, was education. A lifelong learner, Bill dedicated 44 years as a professor and researcher at Red Deer College, retiring in 2016. He made a positive impact in countless student lives over the decades and while a demanding teacher, he helped his students to shine. Bill further walked the talk in his passion for education – in particular public education – when he decided to run as a Red Deer Public Schools Trustee in 1995. This led to his concurrent career as a long-serving (7 terms!) school board trustee and active member in PSBAA and ASBA. Bill deeply believed that education is critical, that there can be no disposable child and through education, we are designing the community that we will live in tomorrow. Bill often remarked that “nothing exceeds like excess”, and he truly lived his life large. With the support and assistance (or wrangling) from Linda, Bill balanced a busy and very full life of family, career and volunteerism. His contributions to his church and his community are extensive and meaningful. Bill truly made a difference. Bill appreciated and took great pride in numerous recognitions and awards throughout his lifetime and even displayed some of his most prized recognition in his room at Bethany CollegeSide right up until the end. Most recently, when presented the Dick Baker Legacy Award in 2024 by the Public School Boards’ Association of Alberta for his commitment to public education, Bill was both honored and humbled. In addition to his beloved Linda and his kids, Bill is remembered by Ken’s family (Jen, Gary and Will) and Robbie’s family (Suzy, Alexis and William) as well as his grand dogs and grand cat. Bill’s younger siblings, Bob (Eileen) and Jane as well as Linda’s family remember Bill as a constant mentor, helper and friend. Bill will also be remembered by dear friends including Bev, Jay and Joy. We all believe Bill is happy to be reunited with his mom, Marie and dad, Ken Stuebing. Bill’s family is tremendously grateful to the incredible team at Bethany CollegeSide who provided great care, with patience and humor over the past two years, as well as Dr. John Julyan-Gudgeon who went above and beyond caring for both Bill and Linda in recent years. A Private Memorial Service and Celebration for Bill will be held by his family. If desired, Memorial Donations in Bill’s honour may be made to Bethany CollegeSide, in support of the programs that he loved attending, or to the Foundation for Red Deer Public Schools, to help the next generation of community leaders. Bill’s family warmly invites friends and colleagues to share their stories or memories at DrBillStories@gmail.com. Bill lived a long life, a worthy life and a life fulfilled. In the words of one of his heroes, Woody Guthrie: “Go to sleep you weary hobo. Let the towns drift slowly by. Listen to the steel rails hummin’. That’s the hobo’s lullaby.” Well done my good and faithful servant. – Matt. 25:21. Cremation entrusted to Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, Red Deer, Alberta.
