Rebels blow out Hurricanes in road victory

Dec 3, 2025 | 9:44 PM

The Red Deer Rebels won their second straight game with a 5-1 win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes on the road on Wednesday.

Rookie forward Owen Shadrick scored twice, and Rebels netminder Matthew Kondro made 19 saves to secure the victory.

The Hurricanes got on the board first with a goal from Red Deer native Easton Daneault just over four minutes into the game. His third of the season was scored off a drop pass from Brayden Smith near the top of the right circle with 11 seconds left on the power play.

From then on, it was all Rebels who scored five unanswered goals.

Approximately three minutes later, Rebels forward Kohen Lodge, who’s also from Red Deer, fired a shot past the netminder right off the face-off to tie the game.

Red Deer took their first lead of the game later in the first period. With 6:57 to go, Czech forward Matej Mikes was left alone in front of the net, and defenceman Keith McInnis, who was in the bottom left corner, found his teammate for Mikes’ first Western Hockey League goal.

In the final minute of the opening period, rookie forward Owen Shadrick scored his third of the season to give the Rebels a 3-1 lead. The product of Valencia, Calif. ripped a shot from a sharp angle to score on the goalie’s shortside.

In the second period, the Rebels scored their fourth unanswered goal of the game off the stick of forward Samuel Drancak.

His marker from the left circle beat the netminder and then off the crossbar and into the net on the man advantage.

In the third period, Shadrick scored his second of the evening to give the Rebels a 5-1 lead. Shadrick knocked in the loose puck in the crease after forward Noah Milford fired a shot on net nearly five minutes into the final frame.

That would be the final goal in a significant victory for the Rebels and improve to 10-12-1-2 in the Eastern Conference standings.

Next up, the Rebels will head to Edmonton on Friday for a date with the Oil Kings before returning home for the Toque and Teddy Bear Toss Game on Saturday against the Prince Albert Raiders at 6 p.m. at the Centrium.
