Suspect arrested following heavy police presence in Ponoka

Ponoka RCMP are expected to release more information regarding a heavy police presence in the community Thursday night.

Shortly after 6 p.m., Ponoka RCMP as well as an RCMP police dog were on scene tracking a suspect potentially armed with a firearm. Police were in the areas between 46 and 48 Avenue and 54 and 51 Street in Ponoka.

The public was asked to avoid the area and call 9-1-1 if they saw anything suspicious, with police noting there were limited physical descriptions at the time.

Shortly after 6:30 p.m., Ponoka RCMP advised that police had located and arrested the suspect.

An update is anticipated once charges are sworn.
