Elizabeth Isabelle Moore (nee Rowan)
Courageous, indomitable, gracious. “A remarkable woman.” It is with an enormous sense of loss that we share with you the peaceful passing of Elizabeth Isabelle Moore (nee: Rowan) on November 10, 2025 at age 95. She is pre-deceased by her loving and devoted husband Thomas Daniel (Danny) Moore.
Isabelle leaves behind three children – Danielle (Bill), Darrell (Sharon) and Brent and eight grandchildren Rowan and Molly, Carter, Grace and Eric, Michael, Kristy and Danny.
Isabelle’s life began on December 03, 1929, as an adventure, born at a midwife’s home between Sylvan Lake and Red Deer. The original plan was Red Deer, but she was impatient, and the emergency midwife was the first to welcome young Belle (Later Auntie Belle to her remarkable nephews and nieces) to the world. She was a rural girl growing up on the farm during the Depression years. It was here she grew to love horses, one of which would deliver her to school each day then meander on back to the farm on its own.
Being a country girl, it would be easy to imagine her becoming a farm wife but none of that for her. First graduated high school then off to normal school in Calgary to become a teacher. After graduation she taught first in Antler Hill, then Red Deer, and finished her career in Calgary.
She met the love of her life on one of her infrequent weekend visits to her home near Sylvan Lake. They met under some suspicious circumstances. She just happened to a have a flattening tire across from the original Northwest Motors on a Saturday evening. Imagine this, the only person working at the time was a handsome WWII veteran by the name of Danny Moore.
Danny and Isabelle were married August 29, 1953. Twins, Danielle and Darrell, then Brent were born over the next 5 years, As the children grew Isabelle became more involved in sports and recreation activities becoming an avid curler, bowler and golfer. Over the years she maintained her sports activities (not just a pretty face) and added volunteer work including buddy reading in the Public School system and museum volunteering as a docent, culminating in the 2002 Mayor’s Recognition Award (citizenship, voluntary service category).
Isabelle attributed her huge and dynamic social circle to her 70-year participation in Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, an organization introduced to her by her brand-new sister-in-law Danny’s older sister, Ruth Sakofsky. It is there she met so many remarkable women.
Busy as she was Isabelle welcomed new adventures and travelling with Danny and her friends all around the world.
Isabelle’s true calling, though, were her eight grandchildren, a group who adored and revered her. Whether they lived nearby or far away, they managed to frequently visit and be entertained by her dry wit, stories of past adventures and loving hugs demonstrating their love for this amazing grandmother.
While a catastrophic spinal bleed left Isabelle a paraplegic for her final 13 years her great humour and courage continued to provide inspiration for all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Even after she lost her beloved Danny a decade ago feeling sorry for herself was not on the menu of her life. Through everything she was an inspiration and gift to us all. But to say she did it on her own would do a great injustice to five remarkable caregivers whose love for Isabelle created the warmth, humour and kindness under which Isabelle flourished. Thanks so much to Annabelle, Tess, Jessa, Jiji and Sheba. Your love did not go unnoticed.
Isabelle is predeceased by her parents, Leonard and Elva Rowan, her older brother Arthur, two older sisters and their husbands Enid Sharpe (Jim Sharpe), Phyllis Parker (Neville Cannon and Winston Parker) as well as nephews Randy Cannon and Bob Sharpe. In addition to immediate family, she is survived by numerous caring nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held for Isabelle at 2 pm on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at Eventide Funeral Chapel 4820-45 St. Red Deer. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to any charity that has touched the lives of the donors or their loved ones.
