Peter Spearin McGregor
On November 9, 2025, Peter passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family.
He was predeceased by his parents, Gladys, and Edward, and by his brother, Robert. Peter will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Patricia; his daughters Shan (Robin), Janis (Cameron), and Kelly (Tim); his grandchildren Spearin (Sarah), Malone, Margie, Duncan, Emily, Amy, and Thomas; as well as his niece, nephews, and many dear friends.
Peter was born and raised in Calgary, growing up in the Crescent Heights neighborhood. He and his brother Robert were well known for their spirited adventures in the northwest hills—stories that could make your hair stand on end. Peter graduated from Crescent Heights High School and went on to earn a Commerce degree from the University of Oklahoma. After returning to Calgary, he met the love of his life, Patricia. They were married in Banff, and in time welcomed three daughters. As a father, Peter was steady, respectful, responsible, and kind. All qualities he passed on to his family by example.
Professionally, Peter spent many years with Royal Trust as a mortgage manager, later becoming a partner at Anderson Preece & Associates as a commercial appraiser.
Peter was always an enthusiastic participant in sport. As a young man he played hockey, often hauling his gear across the Centre Street Bridge on his own, and he also played high school football. Throughout his life he enjoyed handball, racquetball, squash, skiing, curling, golf, and fishing. While he would have called himself an amateur, it was the camaraderie in these activities that mattered most. He famously did one hundred pushups and sit-ups every morning of his working life. Beyond sport, he loved gardening, reading widely, and tackling handyman projects—always with determination and good humor.
Peter and Pat were blessed with lifelong friendships—from their early Calgary circle, to the Red Deer dinner parties, the Kinsmen connections, the Gull Lake community, and many more. When three sons-in-law joined the family, Peter welcomed them warmly. With their arrival came grandchildren, whom Peter and Pat cherished deeply.
Although Peter and Pat travelled widely, their happiest place was Gull Lake—where there was a garden to tend, family and friends to gather with, a comfortable chair, a good book, and often a well-timed happy hour.
Pat, Shan, Janis, and Kelly will miss Peter beyond measure. They will hold close the memories of family camping trips, ski trips, long summer days at the beach, walks down the cabin lane, and the joyful, bustling dinners overlooking the lake.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the many health care staff at the Red Deer Hospital, Daysland Hospital, and Taylor View Towers who helped make Peter’s time in care more comfortable. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
A celebration of Peter’s life will be held at the Lacombe Golf and Country Club on Tuesday, November 18th, at 2:00 p.m.
