VINCETT, Mildred Florence
1923 – 2025
On Friday, September 12, 2025, the family of Mil (cherished Mom, mother-in-law, grandma and great grandma) said goodbye to this vibrant and energetic lady at the age of 102 years. She was born on a bright spring afternoon on Thursday, May 3, 1923, in Moyerton at the foot of the Wolf Hills in eastern Alberta. Mil was the youngest daughter with three older brothers of Arthur and Amy Cooper (Benner). She attended a one-room country school and at the age of ten, until grade ten, walked three and a half miles to class. After one year of correspondence, she finished her diploma at the Vermilion High School (the only one in her family to graduate). That independence and drive was demonstrated throughout her life. In 1944, Mil married Urban Holman and they settled on his farm in the beautiful Battle River Valley near Tolland, Alberta. Son Bill and daughter Eleanor were born while on the farm and after moving the family to run a store and post office in Red Willow with her parents, she also spent a year teaching in the Red Willow Colony where she formed lifelong friendships. In 1954, the family moved to Ponoka where Mil spent twenty-six fruitful years working at the Alberta Hospital, which was a huge employer at that time. Many of their neighbors worked there which provided a safe and caring environment for the kids. Mil’s upbeat personality made her a good fit in the AHP Rec Hall and along with some close coworkers brought joy to their charges every day. The family also became interested in horses at this time and the Ponoka Light Horse Association, gymkhanas, trail rides and horse shows kept Mil busy. Her career continued to blossom as she worked and studied her way from ward aide to administration as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse 3. Her energy and drive did not waver after taking an early retirement from AHP, as she worked as a rec director at the Northcott Lodge, followed by taking her real estate license and working in this exciting job for two years. Then, while on a cruise, met Fred Vincett, who swept her off her feet. They married in 1982 and spent twenty-one busy years on the farm in Galahad. Fred taught Mil how to downhill ski which she loved; how to drive a grain truck and together they created a park of flowers and trees around their beautiful home. They also traveled extensively to such places as China, Africa, Great Britain and to anywhere they could dip their toes in the ocean. While in Galahad, Mil became very involved as president for six years in the Hospital Auxiliary, serving on the Library Board and faithfully attending the Missionary Church. She was blessed throughout her lifetime by her faith in Jesus Christ. Mil had a passion for driving, right from an early start with an old Model T to well into her 90’s driving her Toyota. In September of 2003, Mil and Fred moved from Galahad to Lacombe where they made new friends at the A & W coffee time, enjoyed activities at the Kozy Korner; swam at the Kinsmen Pool and attended church. Unfortunately, her beloved Fred passed away one year later. Mil was predeceased by her parents, Arthur and Amy Cooper; her first husband, Urban William Holman; her second husband, Fred Vincett; her brother, Don and his, wife Carol; her brother, Bern, and his wife Marjorie; her brother, Des, and his wife Beth, her grandson, Russell Pohl and all Fred’s brothers and sisters. She is survived by her son, Bill (Wendy), and daughter, Eleanor (Bill Hutchison); her three grandchildren: David Holman, Lesley Pohl and Justin Pohl (Tracy); her three great-grandchildren: Shayla Maxwell (Jordan); Narra and William Holman; nieces and nephews and longtime friends Fred and Margaret Dibben of Forestburg; Linda Gerard of Saskatoon, Ena Boot and Anne White of Lacombe, as well and many new friends in Lacombe. We, the family wish to thank the staff at the Hamlets in Red Deer who kindly cared for our mother this last eight months. A Private Family Gathering took place in Lacombe on Saturday, September 27, 2025. Cremation entrusted to Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, Red Deer, Alberta.
