Strike to begin Oct. 6, 2025

ATA responds to province’s plans following strike vote results

Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) president Jason Schilling has issued the following statement regarding the Alberta government’s response to teachers’ impending strike, set to begin Oct. 6, 2025.

“The government’s repeated claim that it doesn’t know what teachers want is insulting and unfounded. Over and over again, teachers have sought supports for their students, fair pay and the basic respect they deserve. The ATA has put forward concrete solutions like class size caps, but has been shot down at every turn. The resulting memorandum was the product of last-ditch efforts from the ATA’s bargaining team to reach a proposal that teachers could then vote on.

The Premier may be disappointed that teachers rejected the proposed memorandum, however, the 90 per cent rejection vote clearly demonstrates teachers’ disappointment and frustration with a collapsing education system.

Instead of doing the very thing that teachers have been asking for—investing in our classrooms—the government has now promised parents $30 per day per student when teachers are on strike. This amounts to almost twice as much as teachers are paid to teach those same students in their classrooms.

In other words, the government would rather pay parents to wait out a strike than pay teachers to prevent one.”

On Tuesday, Alberta’s government announced it will be providing financial assistance and educational resources to support parents and students in the event of a teacher strike.

The plan is said to include a new payment program to directly support parents experiencing financial strains because of the strike. An online learning toolkit following the Grades K-12 curriculum has also been developed to support students with at-home learning.
