We are sad to announce the passing of Mr. Ben Hammer at the age of 92 years. Ben was born in Olds Alberta, January 30, 1933. He grew up on the family farm. After he finished his schooling, he farmed with his father and brother, Garnet for many years. Ben met his wife Mary Veikle in Edmonton where she was attending nursing school alongside his sister Cynthia. They married on October 26, 1957. Together they had three children, Neil, Susan and Cheryl. Ben earned his pilot’s license in 1959. He enjoyed flying and would load the family up to fly to Cut Knife, Saskatchewan to visit family there. Ben loved building things. He made a small tractor which they used to go out west. They also used it on the farm to plant and harvest potatoes. Ben made the first enclosed swather cab and John Deere invited him to their factory in the states to show them how he manufactured it. He also built an airstream type trailer and a jet boat. He took the family on many vacations. Ben loved the west country and enjoyed many Sunday drives west of Sundre with the family.
After Ben and Garnet divided the farm, Ben continued farming with his son Neil until 2004 when he sold the farm. Throughout the years, Ben and Mary enjoyed many trips together, New Zealand and Australia and many times to Hawaii. After retiring from farming, they enjoyed going to Thousand Palms for the winter, where they met and made many friends.
Ben and Mary had a strong love, always holding hands and sharing a kiss.
Ben will be lovingly remembered by his wife Mary, of sixty-eight years, his son Neil, (his grandson Louis and his wife Marie, great grandchildren Liam and Caden) (grandson Robert), daughter, Susan (Brent), and
