JAMES SMITH MCLEOD VASS
James Smith McLeod (Jim) Vass was born on a frigid January 11, 1940, to Alexander and I. Marion Vass on a stump farm in northwestern Alberta. He was the youngest of three boys and grew up running around with a dog following him everywhere.
Jim met Lorena Norton in technical school and soon married her, a marriage that endured until his death – over 65 years later. Jim held many jobs throughout his career – farmer, truck driver, millwright, equipment dealership manager just to name a few. He lived most of his life in Hines Creek, Alberta and raised a family of five children with Lorena. He cared about his community and volunteered with several organizations, including chief of the volunteer fire department for over ten years. He enjoyed watching and playing sports, baseball being his favourite.
Jim passed away on September 15, 2025, in Didsbury. He is survived by his loving wife, Lorena Vass, his five children and their spouses, ten grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces and cousins. He is predeceased by his parents and his brothers, Francis and Alexander. He will be remembered by all that knew him as a decent and honest man.
