Barry Thomas O’Connor, born December 4, 1957, in North Battleford, passed away peacefully at the Red Deer Hospice on September 16, 2025, with his loved ones by his side. He was 67 years old.
Barry was the devoted husband of Joy O’Connor, his true love and partner for 30 years. They shared a rare and profound love, one that only a few are fortunate enough to experience. They were married on April 28, 1995, and together, they built a beautiful life surrounded by family. Barry’s love for Joy was steadfast and unwavering, a love that defined him and will be remembered always.
Barry was a proud father to Jim (Lindsay), Sara, and Marc (Danalynn), and his grandchildren—Maddy (Nick), Paige, Avery, Dylan, Austin, Jaidyn, Mckayla, and Taylore—were the light of his life. Of all the relationships Barry cherished, his bond with his great-grandson Avery was especially unique. Their connection was deep, a love that transcended words. Barry took immense joy in being a grandfather and great-grandfather, always proud of the young people his family had become.
He was predeceased by his parents, Rachel Hittel and Raymond O’Connor, his sister Katherine O’Connor, his mother and father in law, Joyce and Dave Urquhart and sister in law LoisAnne Berridge. Barry is survived by his stepfather Joseph Hittel, and his siblings: Brent (Cathy), Craig (Rita), Darcy (Debra), Beth (Rick), Darcy (Karen), Paul (Irena), Cheryl and brothers in law Paul and Ralph (Sharon) and sister in law Lynn. He will be greatly missed by his numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The playful banter he shared with his siblings was a constant source of joy, filled with humor, teasing, and love. Barry always knew how to lighten the mood and bring a smile to everyone’s face.
Barry’s love for his pets was deep and undeniable. His animals brought him great comfort, and they held a special place in his heart throughout his life. They were his companions, his confidantes, and a source of unconditional love.
In his final days, Barry’s greatest wish was to be surrounded by family. Being with those he loved was all that mattered to him. It was a fitting end to a life so rooted in the importance of family, support, and love. Barry was incredibly accepting, non-judgmental, and welcoming to all who came into his life, always offering a kind word, a listening ear, and an open heart.
Barry’s legacy is his family, and he will be remembered as a kind, compassionate, loyal, and fun-loving man who was always there for the people he loved. He was a man who lived his life for those around him and whose love will continue to echo in the hearts of all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Red Deer Hospice, where Barry passed away surrounded by his family.
A celebration of Barry’s life will be held on Monday, September 22, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Home Church, 1 – England Way, Red Deer County AB. A lunch will follow in the same room.
Barry leaves behind a world of love and memories, and while he will be deeply missed, his spirit will forever remain with those he loved.
