Maier, Berthold Josef
It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Bert Maier, a cherished long-time resident of Sundre, Alberta, at the age of 89. Bert died after a brief stay at St. Mary’s Hospital in Camrose, Alberta.
Born Berthold Josef Maier in Freiburg, Germany, on October 13, 1935, Bert immigrated to Canada in 1958. He settled in Calgary, Alberta, where he married Barbara Scott in 1965, becoming a stepfather to Bonnie and Wes. Later that same year, Bert and Barbara welcomed their daughter, Julie. Bert was also blessed with two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In 1977, Bert, Barbara, and Julie moved to a property in Bergen, fulfilling Bert’s lifelong dream of farming and country living. They successfully operated a hog farm and a small butcher shop for many years. In 1997, they sold the farm and moved closer to town, where Bert and Barbara built a new home and established Bert’s Custom Meat Cutting. After the tragic loss of their daughter Bonnie in 2004 and son Wes in 2007, they retired in 2010, moving to a smaller residence on their subdivided property, where Bert resided until his final days.
Bert found joy in butchering, relaxing on his porch in the sun with his cat, and sharing beers or schnapps with friends in his garage.
Bert is survived by his daughter Julie (Gary) Baumgartner, granddaughter Britney (Kurtis) Scott, granddaughter Katelyn Macintyre, and great-granddaughters Sage Scott and Rae Scott. He is also mourned by his sister Inge Ehrler of Germany, son-in-law John Roberts, daughter-in-law Katleen Macintyre, and numerous nieces and nephews. Bert was predeceased by his beloved wife of 53 years, Barbara Maier, his son James (Wes) Macintyre, and daughter Bonnie Roberts.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the many friends who supported Bert in his later years, and to Dr. Shute and the nurses at St. Mary’s Hospital in Camrose for their compassionate care and communication.
A private family burial will be held at the Sundre Cemetery at a later date.
