Valerie Anne Zager
Beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Sister and Friend
November 27, 1937 – August 26, 2025
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Valerie Anne Zager, who left this world peacefully on August 26, 2025, at the Red Deer Regional Hospital surrounded by loved ones.
Born in Preston, Great Britain, Valerie grew up in Rose Cottage near Cuerden Hall in the Lancashire countryside. Once she earned her registered nursing designation, she traveled to Canada for an adventure at 18 years old where she ended up building a life and staying. She worked as an occupational nurse for most of her career at Holmes Foundry in Sarnia, Ontario and then Union Carbide in Red Deer, Alberta where she eventually retired in 1992. She had a tremendous sense of adventure and has traveled across North America as well as abroad to Australia, South Africa, Great Britain and throughout Europe. In addition to her travels, she developed a love and passion for quilting and has made beautiful quilts for family and friends that will be cherished keepsakes. One of her favorite activities that she looked forward to every week was playing cards with her friends on Friday nights.
Valerie will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Susan Larson (Harold), and Lynn Steenwyk (Rob), and sons Greg Zager (Spring) and Chris Zager (Barb); sister Joan Flowers (John), sisters-in-law Viv Kitchen and Brenda Kitchen, niece Rachael Potter and nephews Christopher Flowers, Paul Kitchen, Andrew Kitchen, and Peter Kitchen and many friends. She was a cherished grandmother to Katelyn, Alex, Sean, Cole, Darian, Travis, Kaytlin, Jordyn, Skylar, Addyson, Stephanie and Kerri. Beloved great grandmother to Cody, Hudson, Josie, Liam, Lucas and Natalie. She was predeceased by her parents William and Annie Kitchen, and brothers Bill Kitchen and Christopher Kitchen.
Her memory will be honored with a Celebration of Life on October 11, 2025, from 1-3pm at the Eventide Funeral Home 4820 45 Street Red Deer, AB.
The family is sincerely grateful to the staff at the Red Deer Regional Hospital for their care during her final days.
She will be missed more than words can express, but her spirit will continue to surround us.
