SINTON, Helga
1935 – 2025
Mrs. Helga Sinton (née Schuschke), age 89, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2025, in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. Born on September 29, 1935, in Kloetze, Germany, Helga’s early years were shaped by the challenges of growing up during the turmoil of World War II. Despite these hardships, she cultivated a deep faith and a resilient spirit that would guide her throughout her life. Her commitment to service and compassion led her to pursue studies in pediatric nursing and Christian missionary work—paths that would take her across continents and cultures. In the early 1960s, Helga served as a Lutheran missionary in Kenya and Tanzania for four years. This period was profoundly formative for her, both spiritually and personally. Her work in East Africa reflected her unwavering dedication to helping others and sharing her faith through action. After returning from Africa, she lived in the United States during her first marriage before eventually returning to Germany in 1981. In 1986, Helga married Dr. Eric Sinton and moved with him to Red Deer, Alberta. Together they built a new life rooted in community and shared values. Helga became an active member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Red Deer, where she found spiritual fulfillment and lasting friendships. She also found great joy with her involvement in the church choir, the Red Deer Chamber Singers, and the amateur music group, Toot Sweet. Helga held a Master of Arts degree from Goddard College in Vermont—a testament to her lifelong pursuit of knowledge and personal growth. She was also an accomplished watercolor artist who found inspiration in the natural world around her. Her paintings often captured serene landscapes filled with colour. She loved to visit local nature parks, observing the birds and other wildlife. Helga remained active well into later life through walks on local trails, ice skating at Bower Ponds, and cross-country skiing during Alberta’s snowy winters. Helga cherished time with family and friends above all else. She is lovingly remembered by her son, David (Azra), and their children, Armin and Isaac; daughter, Christine (Michael); brother, Ulrich (Berbel); stepchildren Heather, Hilary, John and Jeremy; step-grandchildren, Sara, Abbie, Micaela, Alyssa, Alasdair, and their children. She was pre-deceased by her beloved husband, Dr. Eric Sinton; her mother, Elisabeth; and father, Heinrich.
