Pair arrested for driving excessively fast near Ponoka

RCMP say two people have been arrested after they were allegedly caught driving 190 km/h northbound on Hwy 2A entering Ponoka.

The incident occurred Aug. 20 around 6 p.m., police say.

The first attempt at a traffic stop resulted in the vehicle fleeing, police also noting they determined the vehicle, a Kia Sorento, was stolen out of Wetaskiwin on Aug. 14.

The suspects and vehicle were located about a half hour later on Range Road 252A. Both occupants were detained.

As a result of the investigation, RCMP have charged 37-year-old Maskwacis resident Brandon Buffalo with:

  • Possession of property obtained by crime $5000;
  • Flight from Police officer;
  • Dangerous Operation of a motor vehicle;
  • Possession of Weapon for dangerous purpose;
  • Resist arrest;
  • Refusal to comply with breath demand;
  • Operate motor vehicle while impaired.

Buffalo was taken before a Justice of the Peace and released from custody with his next court date set for Sept. 12, 2025, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Ponoka.

RCMP have additionally charged 45-year-old resident of Maskwacis, Wydell Rabbit, with;

  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000;
  • Possession of a weapon by dangerous purpose.

Rabbit was taken before a Justice of the Peace and released from custody with his next court date set for Sept. 12, 2025, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Ponoka.
