Severe thunderstorm watch in place for Red Deer and area

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for Red Deer and the surrounding area.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) says conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms on Wednesday that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and large hail.

Officials say thunderstorms have developed in parts of central Alberta and as these thunderstorms move east, they may become severe.

ECCC says there may also be a slight risk of a tornado along the Saskatchewan border and in the areas to the north of Medicine Hat.

The weather agency reminds residents that when thunder roars, to go indoors as lightning kills and injures Canadians every year.
