Evelyn Mae Runnells (nee Papworth) of Red Deer AB passed away on July 1, 2025, at the age of 84 years. Evelyn was born on May 7, 1941, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and spent her early years in St. Vital.
While in high school she enjoyed being a cheerleader. After finishing high school, she began her career path as a Registered Nurse graduating from the nursing program at Grace Hospital School of Nursing in 1963 Upon graduation, she spent time working for the Red Cross and in several medical clinics, eventually finding her home at the Grace Women’s Hospital after moving to Calgary in 1968. She later transferred to the Grace Womens Health Center.
Evelyn practiced as a Registered Nurse for over 35 years, primarily specializing in Women’s health, pregnancy loss, and counselling. She was an old-school style nurse, very caring, often being seen as everyone’s mom, and always being there to listen to anyone. She excelled in her work and was given many service awards throughout her nursing career. After officially retiring from nursing, Evelyn began working for Sisson Furs in Red Deer, AB, a good match considering her impeccable sense of style and class. She loved working for Sisson Furs and retained her love of fashion and shopping as was proven by her impressive collection of shoes and clothes.
Evelyn loved her social life and friends, having made many valuable memories playing crib and bowling. She loved animals, but black labs, loons, and dragonflies held a special place in her heart. She was proud of her independence, and many will remember her sharp wit.
Evelyn is survived by her sons Kevin (Angela) Scoble, Lyle (Carrie Lou) Scoble; grandsons Wyatt and William; granddaughter Kelly; great granddaughter Aurora; sister Marg Papworth Mitchell, and by her first husband Brian Scoble. She was predeceased by her second husband Derry Runnells; her parents Bradwin and Myrtle Papworth; and her sister Betty Papworth Haller.
