JANSSEN, Douglas
1946 – 2025
Our family is deeply saddened to announce the passing of a great man, Douglas Victor Janssen, known widely as Doug. Doug passed away on Friday, June 20, 2025 at his home in Red Deer after a battle with kidney disease at the age of 79 years.
Doug was born in Red Deer, Alberta on May 19, 1946 to Vic and Kay Janssen and was the eldest of 6. After Doug, along came Gordon, Dale, Larry, Lori, and then, Kathy. Doug married Shirley Fox on March 30, 1968. They had two daughters. Carmen in 1972 and Kristie in 1975.
Doug worked for the Government of Alberta which had the family moving a few times – Sherwood Park, Vermillion, Medicine Hat, Camrose, and finally, had the family settling in Innisfail in 1985. He retired from the government in 2001 but continued working with his company, Hola Consulting. Through Hola Consulting, Doug assembled computer systems for families and worked with various colleges in the area teaching computer science courses. He joked he worked to fund his love of travelling. He and Shirley traveled extensively until Shirley passed away after a short battle against cancer in 2003.
Doug moved to Red Deer and was blessed to find another love, Linda Snell. Doug and Linda were married July 10, 2010. With Linda, Doug continued his love of travelling and they had many amazing vacations together.
Doug was a man of many one-liners. Most people can think of a line he’d say – there were many! Every family gathering started with Doug’s line of, “A toast to this auspicious occasion!”
Doug was on many boards, part of many groups, and was always fond of meeting people as he loved visiting, chatting, and getting to know the folks around him. Doug was known for his hospitality and felt there was always room for one more chair around the table, or time for a coffee and Bailey’s.
Laughter and smiles came easily when you were talking with Doug. The back deck at his and Linda’s home was a favorite place for Doug. He could be found visiting, BBQing, or sitting reading the paper.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Linda Janssen, his daughter, Carmen (Rod) Newsham, his daughter, Kristie (Jake) Fehr, stepdaughter, Elizabeth Cronin, stepson, Victor Snell, and grandkids: Nathan, Mitchell, Julie, Colin, Michael, and Viktoria, as well as his siblings, their spouses, many nieces and nephews and other extended family members. Doug was predeceased by his mom, Kay, dad, Vic, brother, Dale, his favorite uncle, Bill and his first wife, Shirley.
A Celebration of Doug’s Life will be held at the Golden Circle Resource Centre, 4620 – 47A Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta on Monday, July 21, 2025 at 2:00 p.m., where Doug was an active member. If desired, Memorial Donations in Doug’s honor may be made directly to the Alberta Kidney Foundation at www.kidney.ca, or by simply donating blood.
