Cornelia “Cori” Hall (Vermeulen) of Red Deer, Alberta, passed away at the Red Deer Regional Hospital on July 4th, 2025, at the age of 76 years. Born in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, in 1948, Cori immigrated to Canada with her family in 1958, settling in Red Deer, Alberta. Across her lifetime, she called many places home around Alberta and British Columbia, with a stint in Christchurch, New Zealand before she settled back in Red Deer to spend the remainder of her years near family.
Cori had many roles in her life as a loving daughter, sister, mother, aunt, great-aunt, and friend. Her life was always marked by compassion and curiosity. Her empathy for others led her to train as a psychiatric nurse, working in mental health services for most of her adult life. At her core, she was a free spirit who lived big, embracing new people, places, and experiences. More recently, Cori traded away the sleepless nights of youthful energy in exchange for quiet comforts. She loved visiting with family and friends, especially her grandnephews and grandniece, she enjoyed the birds and sun in the backyard, often spending hours reading and soaking in the nature around her. She relished in her love for coffee, watching the big bang theory, and early dinners and bedtimes.
Cori never tethered herself to the expectations of others. Often moving against the status quo, she was unapologetically unique in her personality and her personal philosophies. Cori was a passionate and fiery soul when needed, yet gentle, and willing to embrace others with warm hugs and an open ear. She was always prepared to find humour in any situation, and her laughter was infectious to those around her. Her progressive views and exceptional character in treating all as her equal allowed her a rare ability to relate to people of all ages, but particularly younger generations. Her disposition earned her the title of the “cool mom” or “badass aunt” to the friends of her son and nephews.
In all seasons of her life, Cori was present for those around her and had an effortless way of making people feel welcome and seen. Her company will be missed, but her presence will continue to be felt through the memories that her friends and family share of her. She leaves behind a legacy of love, authenticity, and a reminder that it’s okay to be a little wild, a little different, and always kind. Cori is lovingly remembered by her sisters Jane Donald, and Ann Vermeulen, her nephews Eric (Jemma) and Cody (Heather), her grandnephews, Crimson and Ashton, her grandniece, Fenna, and extended friends and family, Sarah Dussault, Dale Fleury, Bruce Hemmingsen, and all the Hogues. Cori is predeceased by her son Riley (1996), and her parents Anna (1977) and Tim (2006).
As per her wishes, no service will be held for Cori. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Red Deer Food Bank. Condolences to Cori’s family may be emailed to meaningful@telus.net.
