Rebels name Marc Habscheid as new head coach

The Red Deer Rebels have got their guy.

On Thursday afternoon they announced Marc Habscheid, a product of Swift Current, Sask., as the 10th head coach in franchise history.

His impressive coaching resume includes 18 years in the Western Hockey League with the Kelowna Rockets, Kamloops Blazers, Chilliwack/ Victoria, and the Prince Albert Raiders.

During that time he recorded 582 wins, the sixth most in WHL history, in 1,166 regular season games.

He’s also coached in 139 WHL playoff games with 75 wins and a .540 win percentage.

During those playoff runs, he led the Kelowna Rockets to a WHL title in 2003 before claiming the Memorial Cup Championship in 2004 as the host team. Most recently, he won a WHL championship with the Prince Albert Raiders in the 2018-19 season.

Habscheid has won plenty of awards including the Dunc McCallum Memorial Trophy as WHL Coach of the Year in 2002-03 and 2018-19, as well as CHL Coach of the Year in 2003.

He also served one season as an assistant coach with the Boston Bruins in 2006-07 and recently coached two seasons of professional hockey in Austria.

During his playing days, he suited up in 148 WHL games for Saskatoon and Kamloops from 1979-83 and recorded 276 points. He went on to play 345 NHL games with Edmonton, Minnesota, Detroit, and Calgary.

He also played and coached for Canada at the World Junior Championship, World Men’s Championship, and Olympic Winter Games.
