MOTTUS, Vera
1942 – 2025
Mrs. Vera Louise Mottus passed away surrounded by her family, at the Red Deer Hospice, on Monday, March 24, 2025 at the age of 82 years. Vera was born on September 23, 1942 in Red Deer to Evan and Vera Robinson and raised in the Poplar Ridge District. Vera has fond memories of her childhood, as she always shared she had the best parents and relished in the adventures she shared with her sister, Gail, and two brothers, Gerald and Dennis, on their farm. A sad time was when Vera’s younger brother, Dennis, passed away at the age of 3 years. Vera continued to enjoy life growing up and helping on the farm. She fondly talks about her memories driving the tractor with grandpa on the binder behind, feeding the pigs, milking cows, shovelling grain, and avoiding the goat that would charge at them while they played on the swing set. She married her first husband, Cecil Kind in 1961 and they welcomed their son, Robert, in 1962. They eventually built their first small home in the same farm yard. Cecil sadly and unexpectedly passed away in November, 1967. Vera married her second husband, Arnold Mottus in 1969. They moved into Red Deer in 1972, welcoming their daughter, Catherine ‘Cathy’ in 1974. Vera first worked as a bookkeeper for Revelstoke Building Materials in 1962, then moved into a secretarial position at MacCosham Van Lines in 1963, before obtaining employment at Red Deer General Hospital in 1964. There, she was employed as a receptionist, switchboard operator, and worked in the admitting and the general offices. In 1967, she completed office work at Forrester’s Water Well Drilling. Vera continued with her education in the Nursing Program at Red Deer College in 1970 and she graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1972. She worked for a brief time at the Red Deer Regional Hospital before transferring to the Red Deer Nursing Home where she worked for over 31 years before retiring. Vera was a dedicated nurse who left a positive impact on the relationships she had built with her patients and colleagues. Vera would always enjoy a coffee, phone call or lunch with the “ladies” from the nursing home. Throughout this time, Vera continued to be a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandma, and great-grandma. She found immense joy in the times she spent with her grandchildren and the memories they made over the years. Vera also enjoyed her family trips out to the Eckville area to visit extended family, going to Disneyland, gardening, and spent an enormous amount of time researching family history. She loved animals, especially her house cats, even though they “drove her crazy”. She was a gentle, kind, loving person who cared deeply for others before herself. Vera will be lovingly remembered by her husband of fifty-five years, Arnold Mottus; her son, Robert (Shannon) Kind; her daughter, Cathy Mottus-Landry (Marcel); her granddaughters, Chelsea Kind-Hougan (Johan), Jenna Maisonville (Keith); her grandson, Carter Mottus, and her great grandchildren, Alina Hougan and Jai Hougan; as well as many extended family members including her sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Vera was predeceased by her parents; her two brothers, Dennis (1954), and Gerald (2019); her sister, Patricia ‘Gail’ Evans (2013); her first husband, Cecil Kind (1967), and her great granddaughter, River Rose Maisonville (2022); grandparents, John ‘Alfred’ and Rose Kind; Arthur and Nellie Robinson; as well as many of her cherished brother-in-laws and sister-in laws. A Memorial Service was held at First Christian Reformed Church, 16 McVicar Street, Red Deer, Alberta on Saturday, March 29, 2025 at 3:00 p.m. If desired, Memorial Donations in Vera’s honor may be made directly to the Red Deer Hospice Society at www.reddeerhospice.com; Sorrentino’s Compassion House, Edmonton at www.compassionhouse.org; Red Deer Mustard Seed School Lunch Program at www.theseed.ca or to the Canadian Cancer Society at www.cancer.ca.
