Jungle Farm co-owner awarded lifetime achiever title in 2025 Women in Ag Awards

Mar 17, 2025 | 1:56 PM

The Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC) is excited to announce Leona Staples, co-owner and operator of The Jungle Farm, as the recipient of its Notable Lifetime Achiever distinction in the 2025 Women in Ag Awards.

“I am proud and excited to be a recipient and I extend my heartfelt thanks to AFSC and sponsors,” commented Staples.

This year’s recipients were chosen for their work in breaking down barriers, setting new expectations and brining fresh ideas and practices to the industry, says the AFSC.

In the announcement, the AFSC calls Staples an advocate, innovator, mentor and legacy-builder who has spent decades fostering agricultural education, agritourism and business mentorship.

Staples grew up on the land that her great-grandfather homesteaded in 1897 and enjoyed the 4-H program. It was through 4-H she met an individual who inspired her to go to university and become a District Home Economist, where she met her husband Blaine, a devoted farmer with a masters in Agriculture Economics.

“I share all this to say we are a deeply rooted and proud family of Alberta farmers! When my mom and dad were ready to retire in 1996, Blaine and I moved back to the farm with our three sons,” shared Staples. “Just like me, they all loved growing up here and they are still involved in the farm as adults.”

The Jungle Farm sees about 30,000 visitors per year, coming to enjoy “u-picking” fresh berries and vegetables. It also hosts over 4,000 children through its educational programs, Staples said.

She commented, “I admire the AFSC for the work they do in recognizing women in agriculture. This is an important aspect in supporting the growth of our industry.”

Award recipients were celebrated on March 16 with a ceremony in Calgary, although Staples and her husband were not in attendance as they are walking the Camino Trail through Portugal and Spain.
