CUPE Local 417 reaches new MoA with Sylvan Lake Foundation

CUPE Local 417 members announced this month they’ve ratified a new Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the Sylvan Lake Foundation.

The Foundation represents the long-term care workers at Sylvan Lake Lodge.

The agreement, which includes multiple key highlights, was approved by Local 417 members with 99 per cent voting in favour.

“This agreement represents unprecedented gains for our members and a major step forward for the long-term care sector in Alberta,” said Deborah Schaan, President of CUPE Local 417, in a media release. “Throughout bargaining, it was clear that the employer and their board are fully committed to the well-being of our members. This agreement reflects that dedication.”

The agreement includes the largest flat rate wage increase in years to reflect the rising cost of living, as well as enhanced shift premiums and a working alone premium.

They also introduced a new Defined Benefit Pension Plan and a Job Evaluation Committee that has equal representation from the employer and the union in reviewing job descriptions, roles, and responsibilities.

“This agreement not only improves wages and working conditions but also sets a new standard for fairness and recognition of our members’ contributions,” added Schaan. “We are incredibly proud of this achievement and grateful for the collaborative approach taken by the employer and board throughout negotiations.”

CUPE Local 417, which was founded in 1963, says it remains committed to advocating for workers in the public sector and continuing progress made in member workplaces across central Alberta.
