Downtown Red Deer building destroyed by fire in October 2021 to be demolished

A building in downtown Red Deer which has sat derelict since a fire ravaged it in October 2021 is finally coming down.

The property at 4909 48 Street will be demolished by the end of June, this year, the City of Red Deer confirms.

After the fire, enforcement actions — under the Municipal Government Act, and due to non-compliance with the local Community Standards Bylaw — had to be taken by the city due to its unattended state of disrepair.

A court order issued in November 2024 allowed the city to move forward with demolition of the building, and site grading.

“It is difficult to forecast the potential for development,” says Dale Lavallee, planner with the City of Red Deer.

“However, with two adjacent vacant sites available for future development, there is an increased opportunity for the properties to be developed either individually or congruently.”

It was in May 2024 when the building next door was also demolished, though reasons were never disclosed.

The city clarifies that though the court order was given, the property has not actually been sold.
