It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Riley David Asuchak, a vibrant, creative, and deeply loved son, brother, and friend. At just 30 years old, he left us far too soon, but his warmth, passion, and the music he shared will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. Riley was born on August 7, 1994, in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, to Dawn Hansen and David Asuchak. At the age of two, his father lost his life in a car accident. He and his mother lived in Red Deer before moving to Edmonton at the age of five, where they met Tim Durning. There, Riley became a big brother to Datton and Talon Durning, a role he embraced with love and loyalty. From a young age, Riley’s intelligence and natural talent shone through. Whether it was sports, music, or any challenge he set his mind to, he pursued it with dedication and heart. At the age of twelve, he moved to Caroline, Alberta, to live with his grandparents, where he attended school and played hockey and football. But more than anything, Riley was an artist. Music was his greatest passion, his way of telling his story. After hearing a friend play guitar, he was determined to learn. He worked tirelessly at his grandpa’s sawmill to save up for his own guitar, and once he had it, he never looked back. He poured his heart into his music, writing and singing songs that reflected his journey, his emotions, and the love he had for the people in his life. He later moved to Edmonton to continue his education. His love for hockey never faded, and while playing recreationally, he had the chance to meet his favorite Oiler, Sam Gagner – a moment he cherished. In recent years, Riley returned to Red Deer to live with his grandfather, Garry Asuchak, where he continued to share his love for music, laughter, and connection with those around him. Riley leaves behind a family who loved him deeply, his parents, Dawn and Tim Durning, his brothers, Datton (Madison) Durning and Talon Durning, and his grandparents, Garry Asuchak and Olga Asuchak, Valerie and Dave Hansen, and Tony Mannarino. He will be deeply missed by his aunts and uncles, including Blaine (Miranda) Hansen, Ted (Dale) Hansen, Tanya (Bernie) Dreiger, and Amanda Asuchak, as well as his numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and close friends. He was welcomed into eternity by those who passed before him, including his birth father, David Asuchak, his grandmother, Margaret Mannarino, and his great grandparents, Beth and Les Asuchak. Riley’s kindness, passion, and unwavering love will never be forgotten. His music, his laughter, and his words will continue to echo in the hearts of all who knew him. Though his time here was far too short, he lived with intensity, creativity, and a heart full of love. His story lives on through those he touched, the music he shared and the love he gave so freely. In Lieu of flowers, if desired, Memorial Donations in Riley’s honor may be made directly to the Canadian Mental Health Association at www.cmha.ca. A Celebration of Riley’s Life will be held at the Kurt Browning Arena, Caroline, Alberta on Saturday, March 8, 2025 at 2:00 p.m.
