Tyler Pelke to deliver keynote speech at upcoming RDP symposium on resilience after trauma

Feb 21, 2025 | 12:58 PM

The Red Deer Polytechnic Psychology Society is inviting the public to attend its upcoming symposium called Hope After Hardship: Discussions in Resilience After Trauma.

The one-time event will take place on Friday, March 14 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Cenovus Energy Learning Common.

The purpose of the symposium is to bring awareness about how hope and resilience can positively affect each person individually.

The event is led by keynote speaker Tyler Pelke who will talk about building resilience in the face of adversity, from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Pelke, who is Red Deer’s Deputy Chief of Emergency Services, has shared his story nationwide over the years, giving speeches at schools and at events.

Back on Dec. 17, 1990, Pelke, who was 14-years-old at the time, was the victim of a disturbing attack. He survived but his friend Curtis Klassen, who was also attacked, did not.

The incident, that took place in his hometown of Altona, Manitoba, was made into an award-winning documentary called Altona.

Following Pelke’s speech, there will be an hour break from 5 to 6:15 p.m. where bannock tacos will be provided from Daystone Catering.

From 6:15 to 8 p.m. the symposium will be wrapped up by a panel discussion with questions from the audience. The discussion panel will be moderated by Dr. Stephen Brown, with panelists Tyler Pelke, Dr. Anomi Bearden, Dr. Jones Adjei, Nicole Jones, Darnel Forro, and Jessica Dewald.

Tickers for the event are $7 each.
