Mrs. Barbara Alice ‘Barb’ McKinnon passed away in Red Deer, Alberta, on Monday, December 23, 2024 at the age of 94 years. She was born in Daysland, and lived on the family farm south of Killam, Alberta, for her childhood. Barb was the oldest of three siblings, Jeanie, Jimmy, and Johnny. In 1950, she married Don McKinnon, and later, in December 1961, they moved to the West Park subdivision in Red Deer, where together they would raise their three children. Barb worked retail at Hudson’s Bay, Fabricana, and Sears, where she had many fond memories. Upon her retirement, she volunteered at the Gift Shop at the Red Deer Regional Hospital for twenty years. Her interests included sewing, making most of the clothes for her family, especially in the lean years, attending West Park Presbyterian Church, and many camping trips with the grandkids and Don, cheering on her grandchildren playing baseball, figure skating, soccer, and flying. She enjoyed baking, which involved creating family favorites such as ginger snaps, chocolate cake, and colorful iced sugar cookies at Christmas, tending her flowers, gardening, and preserving. Barb was a strong woman who lived a good life. She will be lovingly remembered by her son, Malcolm (Kerry); her daughter, Pat (Jim) Bower; her daughter-in-law, Glenda; her grandchildren, Scott (Darcie) McKinnon, Shari (Paul) Fuellbrandt, Jennifer Bower (Norm Hannotte), Jeff Bower, Catherine (Josh) Nail, and Cameron (Orville) McKinnon; and her eleven great grandchildren. Barb was predeceased by her husband, Don; her son, Allen; her grandson, Joe Bower; and her three siblings. If desired, Memorial Donations in Barb’s honor may be made directly to the WestPark Lodge, 5715 – 41 Street Crescent, Red Deer, Alberta, T4N 4T1 or to the West Park Presbyterian Church, 3628 – 57 Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta T4N 4R5.
Revelation 21:4: “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain:
for the former things are passed away.”
