Clarence Patrick Smith of Red Deer, Alberta passed away peacefully at the age of 87 on December 27, 2024 at the Red Deer Hospice with loved ones by his side.
Clarence was born in Rosetown, Saskatchewan on August 3,1937 to Raymond and Susan Smith who ran the local country store in McGee SK. He started school in a 2-room schoolhouse in McGee SK and finished high school in Rosetown. Clarence went on to study Forestry Science at the University of Montana, switching to a degree in Education from the University of Calgary. Over the years, he worked various jobs in research, finance, farming and road construction in addition to teaching in Valleyview and Sunset House, AB, Revelstoke, BC and then Trochu and Huxley, AB. He was the Principal at the Huxley School for many years and then moved into Adult Education for Alberta Fish and Wildlife. He enjoyed being involved with teaching, learning and doing in any capacity but nature and science is where he really shone.
Clarence met his wife, Jean, in Calgary in 1961 where they both worked at a finance company. They had three daughters and were married for 37 years before the unfortunate passing of Jean in 2002. He marched forward and found companionship with a longtime friend who was also widowed, Donna Allan. Together they travelled the world and experienced many adventures for as long as they could.
Clarence leaves behind his three daughters: Laurel Smith of Drumheller, AB, Raylene (Allan) Wise of Edmonton, AB and Kim (Corey) Linderman of Kelowna, BC; grandchildren Casey, Charlotte, Alexander; longtime partner, Donna Allan of Red Deer, AB as well as numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends. He will always be fondly remembered.
Clarence was predeceased by his loving wife, Jean; parents, Raymond, Susan; auntie Jean; brothers, James, Lindon, Charles and sisters, Nora and Barbara.
The family would like to thank all the doctors, nurses and care team who provided support and compassion in the final weeks.
A celebration of Clarence’s life will tentatively be held on Saturday, June 14, 2025. Confirmation of date as well as time and location to be announced.
