Mrs. Doreen Schmidek of Leduc, Alberta passed away suddenly at the Grey Nuns Hospital in Edmonton on Monday, December 16, 2024 at the age of 85 years to be with her husband and Heavenly Father. Doreen was born on September 21, 1939 to her parents, Julius and Helen Plitt. She was the second of five children, and the only daughter. She was raised on the family farm in Cloverlawn and later Rollyview and moved to Red Deer in her later teens, where she worked as an AGT operator.
In 1961, Doreen married the love of her life, Marvin Schmidek and remained married for sixty-two years until his death in 2023. She resided on her husband’s family farm in Craig, Alberta where they raised their four children. She was a devoted wife and mother, working hard on the farm alongside her husband while raising four young children. She always made herself available each Sunday to play the organ for church services.
They moved to Rocky Mountain House in 1977 where she continued to serve her Lord by helping with Sunday School and playing the organ. She worked a variety of jobs while in Rocky, including selling Avon, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Home Hardware but her favorite job was running her children to their sports events and music lessons.
In 1989, they made the move to Red Deer. She continued to be active in the church with the Ladies Aid group. She worked at Walmart for several years, but eventually retired when Marvin retired so they could spend more time with their children and grandchildren and enjoy some travelling. In January 2021 they made the move to Leduc, where she resided at Lifestyle Options, an assisted living facility until her death. Doreen enjoyed baking, crafting and crocheting. She especially loved her tradition of decorating Christmas cookies each year with all her grandchildren. She enjoyed camping with family and friends and travelling south for the winters. Doreen is lovingly remembered by her four children: Lea Ann (Peter), Darren (Jody), Darcy (Michelle), and Michele (Dave); nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Also left to mourn are her brothers, Lorence Plitt (Mary), Edwin Plitt (Adella), Ken Plitt and sister-in-law, Lydia Schmidek along with numerous nephews, nieces and dear friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Marvin, her parents, Julius and Helen Plitt and her brother, Marvin Plitt.
