Red Deer man sentenced in Cold Lake break and enter

A Red Deer man wanted on a Canada-wide warrant and arrested by Cold Lake RCMP this summer has been sentenced to three years in jail.

Leonard Roy McGillis, 60, was sentenced in Cold Lake Court of Justice on Dec. 18, 2024, after being convicted on counts of housebreaking with intent, threats causing death or bodily harm, and assault with a weapon.

It was on July 1, 2024, when Cold Lake RCMP were called to a break and enter in progress at a local home.

Upon arrival, Mounties discovered the suspect in custody by the homeowner, who told police he did not know the suspect.

Investigation determined the suspect had threatened the homeowner with an imitation firearm.

Leonard McGillis of Red Deer was charged with the following offences:

  • Robbery with an offensive weapon;
  • Breaking and entering a residence;
  • Mischief under $5000 dollars;
  • Theft under $5000 dollars;
  • Uttering threats;
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose;
  • Pointing a firearm;
  • Weapons possession contrary to order (x2).

McGillis was wanted on an outstanding Canada-wide warrant for a parole violation at the time of his arrest.
